Alexandre Farto AKA Vhils at the National Theatre D. Maria II
coordination Carlos Vargas
Where are the memories in this building with its immaculate walls and carpeted, silent floors? Where are the memories of its actresses, actors and their voices? We have invited Alexandre Farto to work on the walls of the theatre, in the heart of Lisbon. Could the National Theatre work as a metaphor for the (im)perfect city? This book brings together Vhils' work in the Salão Nobre in September 2014, seen through the eye of photographer Paulo Catrica, together with texts by António Mega Ferreira, Vitor Pavão dos Santos and Carlos Vargas.
author Paulo Catrica
This visual essay proposes a theory about D. Maria II’s memory and space, summoning different genres and kinds of photography, from different eras. Starting from the present and rescuing historical photographs from several archives, this photographic atlas projects a building from the ‘new’ theatre and from the ‘other’ theatre, but it doesn’t pretend to illustrate, nor to rebuild this edifice, nor what exists today and what was consumed by the fire in 1964.

Graça Morais: Scenarios and Costumes
coordination Cristina Faria and Jorge da Costa
Graça Morais' succint but dazzling theatrical work has had a vital presence in the past of the D. Maria II. That presence continues as the theatre is a place of creation that firmly emphasises the importance of preserving heritage and disseminating its collection. For the 1995 performance of Richard II, not only did the painter create the meticulous costumes but also 8 monumental screens that have become an indelible part of Portuguese theatre's recent history.

Contemporary portuguese theatre : experimentalism, politics and utopia : working title
coordination Rui Pina Coelho
The chosen heirs to the experimental projects and the expression of creative freedom that Portuguese theatre successfully achieved during the 1980s and 1990s, the generation of Portuguese theatre makers born for the most part in the 1970s, has been enjoying increasing visibility and importance on both the national and international level. Transcending their forerunners' inability to achieve any effective presence on the international circuits, many of these creators have become quite regular fixtures at many of the most important theatre festivals around the world. Without undermining the singularity of the artistic work carried out by any of the theatrical creators, companies, or structures for theatrical production in question, what has come to the fore are thematic axes, shared concerns, various modes for approaching great formal and aesthetic proximity, and the continuous movement of artists between different projects.
